
THE NICHOLAS THORPE COMPOSITION AWARD
In association with Southwell Choral Society
Prize £500.
Closing date September 1st 2011
Entrants must be 25 years old or younger on September 1st 2011.
Composers are invited to submit a work for Amateur Choral Society with accompaniment for orchestra, piano or organ.
To be performed on Saturday, March 31st 2012 by Southwell Choral Society in Southwell Minster.
The result will be announced on October 1st 2011.
The prize winning work will be a short choral work of up to fifteen minutes long.
The work must be performable by a mixed voice amateur choral society, without soloists, and with an easily resourced accompaniment of standard orchestra, piano or organ. The accompaniment must be within the range of competent amateur players.
The composer is free to choose the text, which must be suitable for performance in a secular or sacred venue at any time of year.
The work must not have been previously performed.
The score can be submitted electronically (Sibelius 5 or PDF file) or in hard copy to reach the adjudicators by September 1st 2011.

Scores must be accompanied by full contact details and proof of age of the composer.
The work will remain the property of the composer.
A panel selected and chaired by the conductor of Southwell Choral Society will judge the entries.
All entrants will be contacted on October 1st and the winner announced.
The judges’ decision will be final.
The organisers reserve the right not to award the prize.
The winning composer will be invited to attend the concert on March 31st 2012 and be presented with the prize.

The winning composer will be invited to attend rehearsals and assist in the preparation of the performance.
The other works in the concert on March 31st will be Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light and The Tree of Life by Albert Marshall.
